About Me

Born: Newton, Kansas

Graduated: Hillsboro High School
Graduated: Washburn University, Bachelor of Arts: English, Political Science
Graduated: Washburn University School of Law, 1998

During my last two years at Washburn University School of Law, I was a Research Assistant for Professor Steven Ramirez. My research work consisted mostly in law related to financial institutions, corporations and director and officer liabilities and securities.

Also, during my last two years at Washburn University School of Law, I worked as a Legal Intern for the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office. During that time, I authored the brief in the case of State v. McBride, a case involving the religious use of marijuana. The Kansas Court of Appeals sited significant portions of the research I conducted and placed in the State's brief. Additionally, I was the only Legal Intern to receive permission to conduct a felony jury trial. Legal Interns were typically limited to the handling of misdemeanor cases.  I won that first jury trial.

Law BooksI was later hired as an Assistant District Attorney in Shawnee County. During my time as an Assistant District Attorney, I handled juvenile offenses ranging from low-level misdemeanors to homicide cases. I also handled Care and Treatment cases for those who required admittance to State Institutions for their mental health.

After the District Attorney's Office, I was a junior associate for a short time at a law firm in Wichita. My work there consisted of insurance defense and litigation. I was responsible for and conducted my own jury trials and preparation. This included depositions, motion, and trial work. My main focus while there was medical malpractice defense.

I then moved on to the Reno County Public Defender's Office. I handled all sorts of criminal defense cases. However, toward the end of my stay there, I was invited to act as a Judge Pro Tem (Temporary Judge) for the retired Chief Administrative Judge, the Honorable Steve Becker. I sat several times as Judge Pro Tem for Judge Becker, including the handling of small claims cases.

As my background in school emphasized a desire to work in a corporate environment, I then went to Learjet, Inc. in Wichita, Kansas. While at Learjet, my job title was Operations Counsel. I handled contract drafting and negotiations for all sorts of materials and services for Learjet. I was the only Operations Counsel selected by Learjet's parent company Canadair, located in Montreal, to handle negotiations for some new aircraft for Canadair. It was unusual for a Montreal-based company to select a Wichita attorney to handle international contract negotiations for their own aircraft.

I moved to the Saline County Attorney's Office in 2003. During my time there, I was the assigned drug prosecutor. During that time I developed a close knowledge of narcotics investigations, how they are conducted and how they develop. My most intense cases were those involving Clandestine Meth Labs and illegal drug sales.

I taught Business Law for three years at Hutchinson Community College. I taught a course in Family Law for Hutchinson Community College. I taught a course in Purchasing Law at Kansas Newman University. I also taught a course in Criminal Law at Kansas Wesleyan University.
